For most businesses, lack of guidance and years of decisions not based on an effective IT strategy has either left them with multitudes of software that do not work together, or have had to contend with large maintenance costs to be able to avail of large, monolithic solution offerings from traditional, one-size-fits-all enterprise systems companies.
Small and medium size companies that wanted to computerize and streamline their operations with IT systems often starts with no effective IT strategy at all. They buy off-the-shelf software products or commission development of systems on the basis of need. There is no planning, or if there is planning, integration of the individual systems was often not on top of the considerations list. The end result is a frankenstein list of systems that do not work together.
